Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology

The museum is located on Downing street in Cambridge and is open Tuesday-Sunday and is free. The material in the museum is organised into a number of key areas: Archaeological collections, Anthropological collections, Photographic collections, Modern and contemporary art and Archival material. It was originally founded in 1884 and has been in its present location since 1913. The collection spans nearly two million years of human history, with the oldest object being 1.8 million years old (an old stone tool).

The museums archaeological finds range from tools from east Africa and post medieval finds from Cambridge.

Since the 1990's the museum has displayed modern and contemporary art. "The Museum is now building a wide-ranging collection of sculpture, prints, paintings and digital and installation works, that foreground indigenous perspectives from various parts of the world, and include works by British and other artists that respond to both anthropological and archaeological collections, and to western traditions of collecting and museum-making."


At the moment the museum is holding activities such as; creative writing courses, drawing from the collection, and exhibition exploring the heritage of India and an exhibition of photographs by Sabelo Mlangeni in South Africa.
